Fall Cleanup — What's the Right Time?
Travis C. May 14, 2026 at 6:19 PM
A fall cleanup has come up a lot as something people want to see happen. A couple of timing options have been discussed:
Memorial Day weekend — catches people before summer gets too busy and is a natural community moment.
Around Settlers Days (September) — ties into an existing event that already brings people downtown, which could mean higher turnout.
Both have merit. What do you think? Would you show up for a fall cleanup, and which timing would you be most likely to make work?

Memorial Day: we do have the parade on Monday morning. It starts in front of the fire station, heads down E. Prairie St. to N. East St., and ends at Marengo Cemetery. So maybe we could get a crew out here on Sunday to make sure there’s no trash along the parade route or in the cemetery? It’s not a candy-throwing parade so there shouldn’t be any need for clean up after.
Settlers Days- I forget who mentioned it at the meeting, but love the idea! I believe events begin on Thursday (10/8??) so maybe we could get crews out on Wednesday to do a pre-clean wherever events will be held for the “weekend”? Then have a crew to clean up the parade route immediately following the parade? And final crew out Monday to help with anything remaining in the other areas?

Settlers Day Committee is in for clean up help. They said that they can provide Community Service hours to anyone who helps out. Just to let Colleen at the Chamber know who would like to receive that. (Once this is a finalized event, we can include that there too).
They loved the above ideas plus could really use help cleaning up downtown after Saturday Night on Main Street. Committee members and other volunteers try to keep up with it during the festivities, but after the event ends (10pm), they can always use help emptying garbage cans and picking up whatever trash may have been missed.
So if everyone wants to think about this and we can figure out maybe doing a signup closer to?
