Adopt-a-Block — Should We Build This Out?

Travis C. May 14, 2026 at 6:19 PM
An "adopt-a-block" program has come up a few times as something people want — where individuals, families, or small groups take informal ownership of keeping a specific stretch of Marengo clean and looking good year-round, not just during Earth Week. We haven't built this out yet, but the interest is clearly there. A few questions worth discussing: How would it work in practice? Would people sign up for a specific street or area? What support would we provide — bags, grabbers, a map of claimed areas? Is there a recognition component, or does it stay informal? Would you participate? This doesn't have to be complicated to be effective. Curious what people think.

I suggest we have a sign up for the different blocks and split the longer blocks up. We could have let’s say up to 3 people/families per block since everyone leads busy lives. I would say since this more of throughout the year/anytime you see trash pickup, it would make sense just to provide your own supplies and toss in your own garbage bin. Would love if everyone would share pics in our fb page when they do a cleanup; not as much for recognition, but as a way to convince more people to adopt a block. Plus it’s a good reminder to us all that we can just pick up trash whenever we see it. I’d be happy to adopt my street.

Can you sign up by clicking on which ward you want to adopt a block or street in? Then maybe those adopted streets could be highlighted? Agree that whoever adopts should supply what is needed to accomplish the job. Any major issues encountered should be brought to city’s attention. Great ideas Travis and Lexy

Love the ward and highlighting the adopted streets! I feel like that would be the easiest way. Kind of like picking out your seats when buying tickets online. And yes, definitely bring issues to City’s attention.

I think it should be doable, I'll have to figure out the best way to do it but I don't see why it couldn't be done that way. Give me a bit of time to look into how to do it but and when I have some time il work on building it out, if it's got enough general interest!

Whats the community thoughts on adopt a street vs adopt a block. adopt a street is easier to implement than blocks lol

If adopt a street is easier and someone wants to adopt a block- can’t they just adopt 4 streets? I thought this was a great idea from the McHenry county adopt a road site-

Update — it's live! The Adopt-a-Block map is now up at beautifymarengo.com/adopt-a-block. You can click any street segment on the map to select it, adopt it with your mailing list email, and it turns amber to show it's claimed. Your own segments show in purple so you can always see what you've taken on. To answer Ellie's question — I had originally floated adopt-a-street in this thread because it was easier to implement, but I took the extra time to break the map down into individual street segments (roughly intersection-to-intersection) so adoption is more flexible. If you want to cover a full block you just click the segments that make it up and adopt them all at once. Max is 10 segments per person so there's plenty of room to cover a good stretch without one person locking down half the city. Thanks everyone for pushing this forward — the feedback in this thread is exactly what shaped how it got built.
